Judges Comments

"Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to judge Sweepstakes at 
the Potomac Valley Regional Specialty. It was an honor to have been asked 
and great fun to do. All breeders should try this at least once as it 
gives you a very different perspective on the entire sport of 
conformation. The club did a great job hosting this event and the dogs 
were presented very well and in good condition.

General Observations:
I was very pleased with the average structure, balance, movement and type. 
It was better than I thought it would be and quality ran deep into several 
of the classes. Balance, toplines, necks, and side gaits were very nice 
giving wonderful overall outlines. Front and rear movement wasn't quit as 
strong but still better than I had expected. I was a bit surprised by the 
problems with faces, facial markings and heads. Normally, I wouldn't 
mention this but the numbers of problems caused me some concern. Puppies 
were in various stages of growth so their head shapes can still change but 
there were many that already had exaggerated stops, which will get worse 
with age, and I saw many round, protruding and/or light eyes that took 
away from the sweet expression we all want. There were also several heads 
that were houndy in appearance with muzzles too long and snipy with 
elongated, sloping stops and weak backskulls (more likely to improve with 
age). Numerous and/or moderate to severe variations in the areas I 
described above takes away from that beautiful Berner look that melts your 
heart. I only found two level bites and one kink in the tail so that's 
good news. Most dogs were in proper weight and good condition, also good 
news.

Best In Puppy Sweeps: Tallpine's Saboteur (#7) from the 6-9 month dog 
class. He was a wonderful package from all aspects. His movement was 
clean from every direction with exceptional side gait and balanced, free 
flowing extension. His outline was beautifully balanced and correct and 
his size was proper for his age. His head was correct with a lovely 
expression. A real standout.

Best Opposite Sex to Best Puppy in Sweeps: Greenway's Love Em and Leave Em 
(#44) from the 9-12 month bitch class. She was also a very nice overall package 
with proper balance of body and movement. She was distinctly feminine 
while still being in the middle of the standard giving a lovely picture.

Best in Veteran's Sweeps: CH Kelissa's Cover Girl (#166) from the 7-9 
year bitch class. This one knocked my socks off. Absolutely beautiful with a 
stunning side gait and outline. She moved with the grace of a 3 year old. 
WOW! I was thrilled to see her take BOS in the regular classes, well 
deserved.

Best Opposite Sex to Best in Veteran's Sweeps: CH Blackstar Hennessy 
(#161) from the 7-9 year dog class. One handsome boy with wonderful type, 
overall balance and movement for his age. He was in great condition and 
could have easily taken it all on a different day.

Noteworthy Veteran's: The second place in the 7-9 year bitch class, CH 
Memories Talk to Greenway, gave the winner a run for her money. The one 
that stole my heart was CH Moenschsberg's Amie Zoey from the over 11 year bitch 
class. She was absolutely lovely, in excellent condition and still had a 
wonderful outline, balance and correct movement in all directions. Truly 
a gift from God.
